Marilyn tells John that she has asked for them to be placed back on the fostering program, but he is reluctant due to his bad experience with Skye.

John brings Katarina to the mural and give Evelyn a warning, but Katarina said that the students didn't break the law and there was nothing she can do to stop them. Jett had been keeping her death a secret and he is sent to live with a foster family. When he runs away, Gina takes him in.After his mother's funeral, Jett acts out and pushes Gina. John becomes annoyed with Gina, but they eventually reconcile. John and Gina plan to adopt Jett, but Richard gets in touch and states that he wants his son. Gina and John say goodbye to Jett, but a couple of weeks later, Richard allows him to return. John thinks that Gina and Jett are leaving him out of their celebrations.

When Alf suffers a heart attack and a stroke, Marilyn returns him to support him. John tells Marilyn that he wants to foster another child and they foster Jordan Walsh . John initially tries too hard to befriend Jordan, but he later offers him a job at the juice bar and they bond.

John also gave Jett an old boat called Diana, which was one belonged to Alf. In 2014, Jet is still grieving the death of Gina who was the principal of Summer Bay High so he decides to join the school committee. He doesn't want anyone to forget about Gina so he organizes a fund raiser, at which Kyle Braxton performs, to help build a fund for a memorial for Gina. The fundraiser is a success and Jett starts to design the memorial. Jett begins dating Nina Bailey, a girl he met at the school disco.

He's the stepfather to Gina's sons, Hugo Austin, Brendan Austin, Xavier Austin and Jenena's son, Trey Palmer. He's also the father of Shandi Palmer and the adoptive father of his foster son, Jett James. Marilyn helps clean things up and she finds a winning lottery ticket, which she gives to Colleen and convinces her to spend the money wisely. Miles, Romeo Smith and Nicole Franklin are overwhelmed by Marilyn and her new age ideas at first, but they get used to living with her. Marilyn starts having strange dreams about Miles' imaginary friend, Rabbit , and she later dreams about Byron. She tells Alf about her dreams, but he thinks she is taking them too seriously. Gina decides to foster Jett and she and her husband John Palmer eventually decide to officially adopt the lad. But tragedy strikes on the drive to court to finalise the adoption, when Gina suddenly falls unconscious while driving the car and dies from an aneurysm at the roadside.
Jett struggles to cope Casey's death and he and Sasha embrace. Jett learnt about the postpone from Shandi and the two siblings work together to make John and Marilyn to change their minds about postponing the wedding. Jett goes to a school camp for a week and return back home with a gift for John. But Bianca tells John that Jett stole a lot of money from someone and spend it on an expensive gift.

Lance thinks they are moving too fast and Marilyn tells him that she going on a date with his housemate, Martin Dibble instead. Marilyn dumps Lance and moves into a hotel, but Lance wins her back when he gets her a job at The Diner.
When he gets out of prison in time for Jordan's 16th birthday, he struggles to reconnect with Jordan who has settled in with his foster parents. Eventually the two reconcile and move back to the city together. They first met at a school disco and Jett asked her to dance and they danced. They later hang out at his place and they shared their first kiss.
Marilyn realises that Colleen just wants to be near Lance and she calls him on her behalf. Lance invites his mother to Las Vegas and Marilyn and Roo throw her a leaving party. A week later, Marilyn is mugged on her way home by Jett James. She decides not to press charges when Jett apologises.

Longtime NBC News correspondent and anchor John Palmer has died at the age of 77 after a “short, sudden illness”, the network reported tonight. On April 25, 1980, Palmer reported from the White House lawn to break the news of the aborted rescue attempt of American hostages held in Iran. That story and the following coverage made him the first broadcast journalist to earn the White House press corps’ Merriman Memorial Award for Excellence in presidential news coverage. Palmer also anchored the first hours of coverage of the Challenger Space Shuttle tragedy on January 28, 1986, and other special reports.
